Our Research Model

Brick Meets Click has been measuring online grocery spending for the last ten years. We started in 2011 working for various US retailers, and in 2016we expanded our tracking service nationally.

In early 2020, we conducted several monthly surveys in order to monitor the surges caused by the pandemic. Since Jan. 2021, we have maintained the monthly cadence as the more regular updates have proved extremely valuable to retailers and the industry alike.

Our model utilizes a bottom-up approach and leverages data and/or insights from:

  • Nationally represented sample of consumers, age 18 years and older who participate in the household’s grocery shopping;
  • Government data sources related to population, inflation, and household spending trends; and
  • Proprietary adoption and diffusion algorithms that integrate the effects of improving shopping experiences and associated word-of-mouth activities.

Retail Formats and Receiving Methods

The scope of the online grocery market is defined as including the sale of any “grocery” product, whether shipped to home via common or contract carrier, delivered via a first- or third-party provider, or picked up inside or outside a store or designated location. (See table below.)
